Collaborations That Link Epidemiologists and Statisticians:

"On Making Beautiful Music Together"

 

  <Abstract>

The points of departure for this talk are several themes introduced by Jerzy Neyman in his paper entitled "Statistics Servant of All Science," published as a Science article in 1955. Neyman had a direct influence on Morton Kramer, my own mentor in biostatistics from 1977 until his death in 1998 at age 84 years. Kramer tried to expand my understanding of statistical theory and probability, and taught me to value collaborations between epidemiologists and statisticians. As it happens, many epidemiologists share the statistician's love for mathematics. Nevertheless, too few epidemiologists know how to frame the best questions for statisticians, and too few statisticians know how to frame the best questions for epidemiologists. In consequence, many collaborations of epidemiologists and statisticians fall short of a desired goal of 'making beautiful music together' (i.e., coaxing the observed data to 'sing'). After sharing some thoughts and experiences based on my many collaborations with statisticians, I will close by talking about some challenges faced by many statisticians during the middle years of their careers, a socially maladaptive path that can follow these challenges, and an alternative socially adaptive path that I discovered by working with expert statisticians over the years since 1980.
